Institute of Chemistry Ceylon Conferred Distinguished Service Award to Prof. S. P. Deraniyagala

The council of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon awarded the “Distinguished Service Award 2017” to Prof. S. P. Deraniyagala at the 46th Annual sessions of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.

Prof. S P Deraniyagala obtained his BSc special degree from University of Colombo and joined University of Sri Jayewardenepura as a Probationary Assistant Lecturer in 1979. He received his PhD from Dalhousie University and was then promoted to Senior Lecturer and later was appointed as a Professor in Chemistry in 2002 and as a Senior Professor in 2009 at University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Prof. Deraniyagala is an active member of the Institute of Chemistry and has made a significant contribution to the academic programme of the Graduateship in Chemistry. He joined the Institute in 1985 and has continued his service as a lecturer, examiner and course coordinator for inorganic Chemistry and was appointed as the second Honorary Rector of the College of Chemical Sciences in 2015. Professor Deraniyagala has been a Member of the Council of Institute of Chemistry Ceylon for many years has served in many capacities as Joint Secretory (1991), Vice President (2007/2008), President Elect (2008/2009), President of the Institute (2009/2010) and as the Rector of the College of Chemical Sciences. He has contributed substantially to several important committees including, Academic Board of the CCS, Monograph Committee, Board of Examiners and Inter School Chemistry Quiz Committee.

Professor Deraniyagala was the Chief Examiner of the Advanced Level Examination from 1986-2008 and the Co-controller for Colombo District for several Years. He is a Life Member of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) and a Member of the Research Board of Advisers, American Biographical Institute. He has been the Editor of the Vidyodaya Journal of Science from 2009 to date. Prof. S. P. Deraniyagala has numerous publications in internationally refereed journals and communications at conferences to his credit.
