Prof Sagarika Ekanayake, Dept of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura is the recipient of the Prof M US Sultanbawa award for Research in Chemistry 2015, awarded by Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon at the Inauguration of the Annual Sessions of 2016 held on 15th June 2016. The award was for the paper titled “Anti-diabetic compounds in Syzygium cumini ready to serve herbal drink” presented at the annual sessions 2015 authored by P R D Perera S Ekanayake and K K D S Ranaweera. The presentation comprised part of the doctoral degree work of Dr Perera attached to the Dept of Food Sciences and Technology of the same university. The work demonstrated the presence of proven antidiabetic compounds in the Syzygium cumini (madan) bark decoction and the ready to serve (RTS) herbal drink developed using the decoction. Syzygium cumini bark decoction is used in treating diabetes mellitus in Ayurvedha medicine. Further research is being carried out to prove the efficacy of the above RTS herbal drink.
