Professor Subramaniam Sotheeswaran is an Emeritus Professor of the University of the South Pacific in Fiji since April 2009. He moved to the South Pacific in late 1985. He was an Associate Professor in Chemistry at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, before he left for the South Pacific in 1985. He served the University of Peradeniya during 1967-1985 as a senior lecturer and then as an associate professor of chemistry. He was Head of the Chemistry Department at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji from 1994-2000.
Professor Sotheeswaran obtained both his Ph. D degree (1967) and D.Sc degree (1987) from the University of Hull, UK. Professor Sotheeswaran has spent his sabbatical leave periods at the following Universities: Waikato University, Hamilton, New Zealand (1996); Research School of Chemistry, Australian National University, Canberra (1988); Universitat Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany (1989 and 1984), Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada (1982/1983), University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia (1973/1974).
Professor Sotheeswaran is currently (2016) a Senior Professor of Chemistry at the College of Chemical Sciences, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, after being appointed as the Foundation Professor of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon in 2006, whilst on leave from the University of the South Pacific at the end of 2005. Professor Sotheeswaran was awarded the Bhikaji Framji Khan Gold Medal for the best performance at the B.Sc Chemistry Honours examination by the University of Ceylon (in 1963). He has more than 100 scientific publications in international journals and more than 100 communications published as proceedings of international conferences. He has authored many monographs published by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.
